Fan in Baby’s Room Lowers SIDS Risk

We've always used a fan in the kid's rooms, but now, it looks like there's even more reason to use one.

An article over at the NYTimes Well Blog talks about a new study that finds that a Fan in Baby’s Room Lowers SIDS Risk.

Here are some other reasons to use a fan in the kids' rooms:

* White noise helps soothe babies. We first started using a fan after reading The Happiest Baby on the Block's suggestion that white noise helps calm babies.

* It blocks out sounds from the rest of the house. Not having to tiptoe around the house after the kids have gone to bed is a godsend! Especially in our creaky 100 yr-old Victorian.

* If your kids are used to sleeping with a fan at home, then sleeping with a fan while traveling will make the strange place feel more like home.

* If you use a fan with an air filter, your kids are breathing cleaner air. (My environmental engineer sister wants me to remind you to *never* use an ionic air purifier. It emits ozone which can build up to high levels in a closed room. Instead, select an air purifier with a HEPA filter.)

Wow, I had no idea! We've always used a fan in SB's room for white noise, but I never figured it was good for his health as well.
